Start with three yes-or-no questions. Is the television 4K? Does it support Dolby Vision? Does your setup depend on a particular app, VPN, utility, or sideloaded Android APK? Those answers narrow this lineup faster than comparing lists of streaming services.

A 1080p television doesn’t gain 4K pixels from a 4K stick. A television without Dolby Vision can’t show that format. And a missing app can make every picture specification irrelevant. This is why the operating-system check belongs before the price check.

Vega OS versus Fire OS is the real dividing line

That distinction matters because a Fire OS APK isn’t a local drop-in app on Vega OS. Amazon gives developers separate Vega paths based on React Native, web technology, and native modules. Its Cloud App Program can stream some eligible Fire OS apps to a Vega device, but Amazon says that program is limited to apps it selects.

Vega can sideload Vega VPKG packages through a registered Developer Mode workflow, but it can’t treat an Android APK as the same file. If Android APK sideloading is part of the plan, choose the 4K Plus's familiar Fire OS environment unless you have verified a Vega-native path. That’s a safer platform decision, not a promise that every APK will install or run correctly.

Choose Fire TV Stick HD for 1080p and travel

The 2026 Fire TV Stick HD targets full-HD televisions and has the most distinct physical advantage in the lineup: Direct Power. Amazon designed it to run from a television's USB port using the included cable, so a hotel or guest-room setup can avoid another wall adapter.

It also has Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.3, but it still uses 1 GB of RAM and 8 GB of storage. Buy it because the television is 1080p or because the power arrangement solves a real travel problem. Don’t buy it expecting a smaller price to erase the Vega OS app check.

Choose Fire TV Stick 4K Select for basic 4K streaming

Fire TV Stick 4K Select is the straightforward choice for a 4K television when your required apps are present and Dolby Vision isn’t part of the setup. Amazon documents 4K output at 60 frames per second, HDR10, HDR10+, HLG, Wi-Fi 5, 1 GB of RAM, and 8 GB of storage.

The limitation isn’t that it lacks a giant number on the box. It’s that Vega OS changes the software assumption while the 1 GB memory and Wi-Fi 5 specification sit below the 4K Plus. Don’t infer a slower interface from those numbers alone; use them as a reason to buy the Select only when its simpler capability set is enough.

Choose Fire TV Stick 4K Plus for Dolby Vision or Fire OS

Fire TV Stick 4K Plus is the strongest capability choice in this trio. Amazon documents Dolby Vision, HDR10, HDR10+, HLG, Wi-Fi 6, 2 GB of RAM, and Fire OS 8. It’s the model to start with when a Dolby Vision television, a Fire OS utility, or an Android-derived app workflow is part of the buying requirement.

It still has only 8 GB of storage, and the specifications don’t prove that it will feel twice as fast because it has twice the RAM of the other two. Treat the extra memory as capacity headroom, not a benchmark. Its strongest verified advantages are the HDR format, Wi-Fi generation, and operating-system environment.

Resolution and HDR: match the television you own

Choose by the display's actual capabilities. For a 1080p set, the HD model already covers the output resolution. For a 4K HDR10+ television, either 4K model can be relevant. For a Dolby Vision television, the 4K Plus is the documented match in this group.

A supported HDR logo doesn’t guarantee a better picture in every room or app. The television, content master, app, HDMI path, and settings all participate. This comparison can identify format support, but it can’t responsibly rank HDR quality without testing the same content on the same display.

Travel and power: the HD has the cleaner pitch

The HD's TV-powered design reduces the number of pieces that have to reach a hotel outlet. That can be more useful than 4K in a room where the television is 1080p, mounted close to a wall, or already using the only convenient power socket.

• One must-have app is missing on the exact operating system. Do not buy around a software gap and hope it disappears.

• You need verified local-media, VPN, game, or accessibility behavior that the manufacturer documentation doesn’t settle. Confirm it on the exact model or wait for hands-on evidence.

The verdict

Fire TV Stick HD is all a 1080p television needs, and its TV USB power trick is handy in a travel bag. The 4K Select handles a basic 4K setup only after every must-have app clears the Vega OS check. The 4K Plus is the safer step up when Dolby Vision, Wi-Fi 6, or the familiar Fire OS environment matters.

If an app requirement is uncertain, stop before checkout and verify it. Choosing the wrong operating system creates more friction than missing the fancier HDR logo. The app you can’t install will annoy you long after the box art is gone.
