AirPods Pro 3 vs AirPods 4 with ANC: which should you buy?
These AirPods solve the same noise problem with two very different fits. The choice starts with what your ears will wear for hours, then moves to noise control, battery life, and travel.

AirPods Pro 3 vs AirPods 4 with ANC at a glance
This comparison is specifically about AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation, model MXP93LL/A. The less expensive standard AirPods 4 is a different variation without ANC, Adaptive Audio, Transparency mode, Conversation Awareness, or the wireless charging case used here.
| Decision | AirPods Pro 3 | AirPods 4 with ANC | Buying consequence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fit | Sealed in-ear fit; five silicone-foam tip sizes, XXS-L | Open fit; no interchangeable tip | Try the shape before letting features decide |
| Noise control | ANC plus passive isolation from the seal | ANC without sealing the ear canal | Pro 3 is the stronger flight and commute choice |
| Rated earbud battery with ANC | Up to 8 hours | Up to 4 hours | Pro 3 has twice Apple's ANC-on ceiling |
| Rated total with ANC | Up to 24 hours with case | Up to 20 hours with case | The earbud runtime gap matters more than the case total |
| Weight per earbud | 5.55g | 4.3g | AirPods 4 is lighter, but shape still controls comfort |
| Stem controls | Press controls plus swipe volume | Press controls; no swipe volume | Pro 3 changes volume without reaching for the phone |
| Hearing features | Hearing Test, Hearing Aid and Hearing Protection where eligible | Not supported | Check age, device, software and region before buying for this |
| Workout heart rate | Supported during workouts | Not supported | Useful only if the supported workout path fits your routine |
| Dust, sweat and water rating | IP57 earbuds and case | IP54 earbuds and case | Neither rating makes the case safe to charge while wet |
| Live Translation | Supported | Supported | Requires a compatible Apple Intelligence iPhone and current software |
| Best reason to buy | Isolation, longer ANC battery and the full Pro feature set | An open fit that avoids silicone tips | Fit is the first branch; features are the second |
| Main downside | A sealed tip can feel intrusive or fail to stay comfortable | Weaker isolation and shorter ANC runtime | Don’t buy either shape on reputation alone |
Fit is the first decision, not the feature list
AirPods Pro 3 sits in the ear canal and uses a tip to create a seal. Apple includes five silicone-foam sizes from XXS through L and provides an Ear Tip Fit Test on a compatible iPhone or iPad. A good seal helps bass response, noise isolation, hearing tests, and stability. A bad seal can undo all four.
AirPods 4 rests at the entrance to the ear canal without an interchangeable tip. Some listeners prefer that open feeling for long work sessions. Others can’t keep the fixed shape secure. The lighter 4.3g weight doesn’t prove it will be more comfortable than the 5.55g Pro 3; geometry matters more than a 1.25g difference.
The practical test is simple: wear the exact shape while talking, chewing, walking, and moving your head. For Pro 3, run Apple's fit test and check each ear independently. For AirPods 4, make sure a smile or jaw movement doesn’t loosen the earbud. Return policy matters because no specification can predict an individual ear.

Choose AirPods Pro 3 for flights, trains, and stronger isolation
Active noise cancellation isn’t the whole noise-control system. AirPods Pro 3 also uses its physical seal to reduce sound before electronics respond. AirPods 4 has to cancel noise while leaving the ear canal open. That can still be useful for steady office or appliance noise, but it can’t reproduce the passive barrier of a well-fitted tip.
Independent comparisons from SoundGuys and RTINGS reach the same practical conclusion: Pro 3 isolates more outside noise. We’re not repeating Apple's own superlative as an independent fact. The recommendation comes from the sealed design plus matched measurement evidence.
Buy Pro 3 for planes, transit, louder gyms, or listening at lower volume around persistent noise. Skip the upgrade if the sealed feeling itself causes fatigue. A theoretically stronger ANC system has no value when the earbuds come out after 20 minutes.

This destination is Apple model MFHP4LL/A. Confirm New condition, seller and shipper before checkout.
Best for: Flights, commuting, louder spaces, longer ANC sessions, volume swipes, workouts and eligible hearing features. Skip if: Silicone tips feel intrusive, fail the fit test, or become uncomfortable during a full listening session.
Choose AirPods 4 with ANC when an open ear canal is non-negotiable
AirPods 4 ANC isn’t the budget Pro. Its reason to exist is the open shape. It gives tip-averse buyers access to Apple's current H2 noise modes without putting silicone inside the ear canal. That can be the better everyday trade for quiet offices, home, calls, and casual listening.
The downside should be explicit. Open fit means more outside sound reaches the ear, bass depends more heavily on the individual shape, and the earbuds are rated for only four hours with ANC on. There’s also no stem volume swipe, so volume changes usually move back to the phone, Siri, Apple Watch, or another connected control.
Don’t assume open fit means guaranteed awareness. ANC and audio can still mask traffic, alarms, or voices. Transparency and Adaptive Audio are listening tools, not permission to ignore the environment.

This destination is the ANC variation, Apple model MXP93LL/A. Don’t substitute standard AirPods 4.
Best for: Tip-averse Apple users who value an open fit more than maximum isolation or all-day ANC runtime. Skip if: Flights, loud commutes, longer sessions, stem volume control or hearing features are the priority.
The battery gap changes how each model travels
Apple rates AirPods Pro 3 for up to eight hours of listening from the earbuds with ANC enabled and up to 24 hours with the case. AirPods 4 with ANC is rated for up to four hours from the earbuds and up to 20 hours with the case. Both list about one hour of listening after five minutes in the case.
The important gap is continuous earbud time, not the four-hour difference in case totals. A case can refill earbuds during a lunch break. It can’t prevent AirPods 4 from needing that break sooner during a long flight, work block, or accessibility use.
These are Apple laboratory ceilings. Calls, higher volume, Spatial Audio, head tracking, Live Translation, heart-rate sensing, environmental conditions, and battery age can change runtime. Treat eight and four as comparison anchors, not promises.
Controls, cases, and durability favor Pro 3—but only if you use them
Both models support press controls, automatic device switching inside Apple's ecosystem, Siri interactions, Personalized Spatial Audio, Adaptive Audio, Transparency, and Conversation Awareness. Pro 3 adds the useful everyday difference of swiping on the stem for volume.
The Pro 3 case supports MagSafe, Apple Watch chargers, Qi, and USB-C. It also has a speaker, lanyard loop, and second-generation Ultra Wideband chip for more precise finding with compatible hardware. The AirPods 4 ANC case supports Qi, Apple Watch chargers, and USB-C, and includes a speaker for Find My. Apple sells the USB-C charging cable separately for both current kits.
Apple rates Pro 3 earbuds and case IP57 and AirPods 4 ANC earbuds and case IP54. Those are resistance ratings under controlled conditions, not waterproofing guarantees. Resistance can decline with wear, and neither case should be charged while wet.
Hearing features and heart rate are real differences with limits
AirPods Pro 3 supports Apple's Hearing Test, Hearing Aid, Hearing Protection, and automatic Conversation Boost where the required device, software, firmware, age, and country or region line up. AirPods 4 with ANC doesn’t support that hearing-health set.
Apple says its Hearing Test is intended for people age 18 and older. The Hearing Aid feature is intended for adults with perceived mild-to-moderate hearing loss and isn’t available in every region. Those limits belong beside the feature—not hidden behind a generic claim that Pro 3 is "medical grade." Sudden, severe, or concerning hearing changes belong with a clinician.
Pro 3 can also sense heart rate during supported workouts, with Apple rating up to 6.5 hours in that use. It’s a workout feature, not a claim of continuous medical monitoring. AirPods 4 ANC does not include the heart-rate sensor.
Live Translation eligibility check
Both models support Live Translation. Apple currently requires iPhone 15 Pro or later, iOS 26 or later, Apple Intelligence, the Translate app, current AirPods firmware, and a supported language and region.
Apple also warns that generated translations can be inaccurate, unexpected, or offensive. Check important information instead of treating the feature as an interpreter for medical, legal, safety, or other consequential conversations.
Apple devices unlock the reason to pay for either model
Both earbuds can connect to Android phones and Windows PCs as Bluetooth headphones, but Apple says functionality is limited on non-Apple devices. The purchase becomes harder to justify when automatic switching, Find My, Personalized Spatial Audio, Siri, Live Translation, hearing features, and Apple-specific settings are unavailable or inconvenient.
For an iPhone-first setup, confirm the oldest Apple device that needs the feature you care about. Live Translation currently needs an Apple Intelligence-capable iPhone, while other AirPods functions have their own operating-system and hardware floors. Buying the earbuds doesn’t upgrade an incompatible phone.
Which AirPods should you buy?
Buy AirPods Pro 3 for frequent travel
The sealed fit, stronger measured isolation, longer ANC battery ceiling, and easier on-stem volume control make Pro 3 the cleaner plane and train choice. Verify that the tips remain comfortable for the duration of the trip.
Buy AirPods Pro 3 for workouts with an iPhone
Choose Pro 3 when the fit test is secure and heart-rate sensing, IP57 protection, or stronger isolation will be used. Skip it when the tips loosen with sweat or when situational awareness is more important than isolation.
Buy AirPods 4 with ANC for tip-free workdays
Choose AirPods 4 ANC when the fixed open shape is already known to fit and you want noise modes without a sealed canal. Plan for a case break during a longer ANC day.
Keep what you own when fit and battery already work
Neither model creates value by replacing earbuds that still fit, hold a useful charge, and solve the same listening job. Upgrade for a concrete gap—fit, isolation, runtime, controls, Find My, hearing eligibility, or workout sensing—not a generation label.
The final recommendation
AirPods Pro 3 is the better default for most iPhone users because its seal, longer ANC battery, volume control, durability rating, and extra sensors solve more demanding listening jobs. That recommendation ends the moment the tips are uncomfortable.
AirPods 4 with ANC is the right alternative for a narrower but important buyer: someone who knows an open AirPods shape fits and will accept weaker isolation and shorter continuous ANC time to avoid silicone tips.

FAQ
Are AirPods Pro 3 better than AirPods 4 with ANC?
AirPods Pro 3 is the stronger default when its silicone tips fit comfortably. It adds a seal for better isolation, a longer ANC battery claim, stem volume swipes, IP57 protection, workout heart-rate sensing, and eligible hearing features. AirPods 4 with ANC is the better purchase when an open fit is the non-negotiable requirement.
Do AirPods 4 with ANC block as much noise as AirPods Pro 3?
No. AirPods 4 can actively reduce noise, but their open fit doesn’t create the passive seal used by AirPods Pro 3. Independent comparisons from SoundGuys and RTINGS also favor AirPods Pro 3 for noise isolation. Individual results still depend on fit.
Do AirPods 4 with ANC support Live Translation?
Yes. Apple supports Live Translation on AirPods 4 with ANC and AirPods Pro 3. It currently requires iPhone 15 Pro or later, iOS 26 or later, Apple Intelligence, Apple's Translate app, current AirPods firmware, and a supported language and region.
Can AirPods 4 with ANC work as hearing aids?
No. Apple's Hearing Test and Hearing Aid features are for compatible AirPods Pro models, including AirPods Pro 3, not AirPods 4 with ANC. Eligibility, device, software, age, and regional requirements apply to the Pro features.
Can I use either model with Android or Windows?
Both can connect as Bluetooth headphones, but Apple says functionality is limited on non-Apple devices. Don’t buy either model mainly for Apple-only features if an Android phone or Windows PC is the primary device.
Which AirPods last longer with noise cancellation on?
Apple rates AirPods Pro 3 for up to eight hours from the earbuds with ANC on, versus up to four hours for AirPods 4 with ANC. Those are controlled-test ceilings, and actual runtime changes with volume, calls, features, environment, and battery age.
